First-Fix & Second-Fix Electrical Materials Checklist for Building in Nigeria

Planning a new flat, duplex, or commercial fit-out? Use this stage-by-stage checklist to prepare your electrical bill of quantities (BOQ) without missing critical items.

Why Plan in Stages

Electrical work on a build site happens in a specific order, and the materials you need arrive in that same order. Pricing everything in one go, upfront, is how items get missed. Break your BOQ into the three stages below instead, and price each one as that stage of work actually starts.

Stage 1 — Piping & First-Fix

This happens before plastering, while the conduit routes are still exposed in the walls and ceiling.

  • PVC conduits (20mm standard, heavier gauge for longer runs)
  • Conduit couplers and bends
  • Junction boxes
  • Knockout boxes (switch and socket back-boxes)
  • Draw wire, for pulling cables through conduit later

Stage 2 — Cabling & Earthing

Once the conduit is in and plastering is done, cables get pulled through and the earthing system goes in.

  • 1.5mm²–16mm² wire coils (sized per circuit — see our cable sizing guide)
  • Armoured feeder cables for sub-mains and generator runs
  • Pure copper earth rods
  • Earth treatment materials (bentonite or earthing compound)
  • Cable lugs and glands for terminations

Stage 3 — Second-Fix Fittings

The finishing stage: everything that gets fitted into the back-boxes once the walls are painted.

  • 13A wall sockets
  • Light switches
  • 20A/45A control switches for water heaters and cookers
  • Distribution boards
